Season 5 Recap
OOC Disclaimer:
After the recording of the show one of the cast members, Brian, was convicted for child sex crimes. We were completely unaware of these actions during the time of recording, and fully condemn them.
With the podcast starting a new series in the near future, we want to assure you that he will not be returning - ever. He will have no further association with this podcast. However, he appears in this season and in Season 8, and this recap has been written to bring players up to speed with the story without having to listen to the episodes.
We have chosen to do it this way as we want to protect our listeners, and leave it up to you whether you want to listen to the episodes or read this instead.
We will be doing the same for Season 8 when it airs. We also will not be promoting this or Season 8 beyond episode 1 for these reasons.
Episode 1
We open a week after the events that occurred at the end of Season 3 & 4, the two seasons ran parallel and have now joined back up.
The Gingerbread House, the team’s base, was compromised at the end of Season 4, when it blew up in the Duke and Hephaestos’ faces.
Lupo then returned, without the Captain, to New Haven to find out that Dollface has been killing people.
Dollface is an animated dress maker’s doll who was a key part of the team in Season 1 & 2.
Since then, Lupo has been staying with Emmet where they’ve both been working on a full on red web serial killer wall to try and locate Dollface and where she may surface next.
They’ve worked tirelessly, as shown by the scattered empty takeout boxes and sleeping bags that they’ve camped in his living room to focus. Not a trace of alcohol is to be found, Emmet and Lupo are taking this seriously.
There have only been a trail of bodies, all of which tie together by cause of death: burned eldritch runes ripping them apart. All of the victims are also members of the arcane community, from shopkeepers to librarians, keepers and possessors of magic.
The first victims showed no sign of resistance, but as word got out about an arcane serial killer through the community, victims started to fight back, some places left destroyed by fights between Dollface and her victims - but all ended the same tragic way.
Every one of these leaves the same arcane fingerprint, there’s no way it could be a copy-cat killer by how distinct Dollface’s magic is.
Lupo determines that there is a rough theme between each of the victims. Whilst they may practice different schools and forms of magic, each of them do dabble with the means to extend one’s life: healers, fortitude and vitality trinkets, those who study magic and its role in life after death.
Lupo and Emmet agree that trying to determine who may be the next victims is key, so that they can get to them before Dollface can.
As they agree on this, in the corner of the room is what can only be described as a small wendy house. With an audible pop the familiar figure of Hood walks out - this is her permanent teleporting booth that Emmet keeps in shadow so that she can go to him if she ever needed him.
Lupo and Hood reunite after being away from each other with a big hug, there’s an awkward moment when Hood asks if the Captain’s coming back, but quickly turn back to the business at hand.
The gang go over to the Gingerbread House to see what they might be able to glean from the burnt out remains.
The shop front sits, completely blown out. Everything inside has been removed and the structure has been stabilised for now.
There are 3 burnt out silhouettes on the floor with swathes of runes and scorch marks painting what could only have been an enormous expulsion of power. They still bloom brightly as though they were fresh, despite this occurring several weeks ago.
Dollface hasn’t been in touch with the team since they were last together, when they brought down Matteson and before the Captain went into a coma. She fell off the grid completely.
Lupo goes to check The Room upstairs. The master bedroom of the apartment above the shopfront, and is exactly as it was when the team first found it. There is a prominent burnt outline of a body scorched into the bed and from it trails of old eldritch runes litter the room. It’s almost completely destroyed.
Lupo’s gut feeling is that the shadow of the body in the bed was Dollface’s creator. Emmet is going back to the station to run a background check on the owner before Dollface to see what comes up.
Before he leaves, Lupo makes a requisition for new weaponry - an electrically charged polearm that can be split into two escrima. She also asks Emmet to check on Medusa to make sure she’s okay.
As Lupo requested something, Hood requests a milkshake. Emmet agrees that after this is all over that the milkshakes are on him. He heads off.
Lupo returns to the building and goes to check the armoury, it’s been cleared out, but she shifts some floorboards to retrieve a handgun she had stashed there prior.
Hood is still in the master bedroom and seeing what she can make out from it. She’s been studying the patterns of all the attacks and how the runes form. From the way the symbols move and shift in the room, that they emanate from the body.
This is much the same as the crime scenes, power released in a powerful burst from the body of the user - in this case Dollface. However, the difference with this one is that the runes feed out like a intertwining pathway from the body and around the room, with purpose. Dollface’s attacks have been explosive in comparison.
Hood identifies what appear to be three distinctive patterned trails. The biggest of the trails channels into an open wardrobe across the room, where inside there is a prop stand - similar to how the dressmaker’s dolls are held up. Hood doesn’t know what any of this means.
Hood and Lupo go to leave, but are suddenly confronted by a strange being floating in the blown out shop front.
This being is masculine humanoid but devoid of any features, their body acts almost as a portal into the cosmos - stars, suns and planets from millions of miles away. The astrological sign of Leo is among his stars. A voice emanates from the being.
He declares that this magic is not of this world and wants to know more about it.
Lupo insists on introductions first. The being states that he has no name. Hood introduces herself.
Lupo asks why he’s here. He reveals that he was drawn in by this power. Lupo asks where he’s from, to which he simply says ‘Off world’.
Lupo is concerned, but Hood senses a new friend! Can we keep him??
After giving him an ocular pat down, Lupo is satisfied that he can be considered an ally.
Lupo wonders if Dollface attacks again whether the being can potentially sense it and help them track her down.
The team has been assembled!
Lupo calls Emmet whilst Hood thinks of a team name.
She fills in Emmet on who they’ve found and finds that Emmet hasn’t been able to get through to Medusa. They get her address, but first want to go see Emmet at the station so that Lupo can collect her requisition and to introduce the being to him.
Hood names the being Space-Man Steve. The being likes this.
They go to the police station. Emmet gives Lupo a briefcase and gives Hood a milkshake. Emmet introduces himself to Steve and goes to shake his hand, Steve does not know earth human greetings.
Emmet points out the Leo constellation, Steve changes it to Gemini and a second Steve slides out of his body.
Everyone’s kind of weirded out, but not Emmet, we learn that Emmet loves horoscopes. He gives Steve a superhero name - The Astrologer.
Steve approves. He reverts to Leo and his double slips back into himself.
The team head over to Medusa’s, Lupo on her motorbike with Hood in a sidecar. Steve flies alongside them. Lupo now has her new weaponry, and handed the gun in to Emmet.
They arrive at Medusa’s clinic, called The Labyrinth.
The receptionist isn’t phased by three weirdos in costume walking in. Lupo asks to speak to Medusa, as it’s urgent.
She reveals that Medusa’s on leave at the moment, and asks everyone to take a seat in the waiting area whilst she tries to contact her. The receptionist can’t seem to get through to her.
Lupo whispers to Hood to get the address.
Hood wants to create a distraction and for the first time reveals Diddles’ new form, Diddles Prime.
Diddles is a small creature made of shadows, think of an angler fish mixed with a cat with wings, that’s Diddles.
Hood summons her little buddy and instructs him to go Prime.
This small mangled being suddenly swells in size to that of a grown man.
Diddles Prime can only be described as a buff bodybuilder made of shadows, glistening in all his glory, with a tiny adorable wittle kitty face. With every pose he hits he makes a tiny, gentle little ‘mew’. He is also wearing a green budgie smuggler.
He strides in front of the receptionist and starts flexing his muscles.
Lupo appears unphased (she is very phased), the Astrologer is very confused.
The receptionist is also very confused.
Whilst Diddles is doing his thing, Hood swat rolls over to the receptionist’s desk and carefully takes photos of the computer screen which has Medusa’s personal details up. She gets her home address and her real name - Susan Hope.
Lupo declares in their awkwardness that they’re going to head off. The receptionist will call the police station if she’s able to get through.
Diddles returns to his small grotesque cat form once they’ve left.
Epsiode 2
The team ride/fly over to Medusa’s home address.
Medusa lives in an apartment in a rougher part of the city. The team buzz her and find that she’s home, she lets them in.
Medusa is initially worried that the Captain had relapsed which was why they were here, but Lupo assures her that he’s fine, and that they’re here to see if she’s okay with all these ‘things’ going on.
Medusa tells the team how this sort of thing is unheard of, normally if the magical community is hit with crime like this that someone knows something, and no one seems to know anything.
Lupo tells Medusa that she may be a target, based on the evidence they’ve found prior about the victims.
Medusa shares some theories that she’s heard from others. Some say that she’s absorbing other people’s life force, others say she’s offing the competition, some reckon that she’s interrogating them for information… It could be anything. Medusa can only discern that Dollface is quick, it’s not a conversation but an execution.
Medusa also shares that there will be a gathering of the magical community coming up to try and come up with a solution.
The team wants to attend, but sadly two out of three of them are not magical. Lupo is human and Steve is an alien.
There’s a knock at the door and Steve goes to answer. There are three men standing there. Steve greets them. They are wearing robes, but fashioned subtly to fit in with modern fashion. They’re street wizards!
The wizards are very confused by Steve’s presence at Medusa’s apartment and try to peer past him to see inside.
The lead wizard tells Steve he wasn’t supposed to be here and forms a ball of magic in his hand which morphs into a sword and slashes Steve. Steve is dazed by the hit and takes a bruise.
Medusa vaults over a sofa to take cover and lets off a spark of energy which flies towards the doorway. She was trying hard not to hit Steve, so her attack hits the doorframe.
Hood asks Medusa if she knows these people, Medusa says she knows them in a way and that they aren’t friends. It’s all Hood needs to summon a ‘Couple o’ Boys’.
This is Diddles’ second new form, he splits into two medium sized versions of himself with shadowy tentacles sprouting from their back. Their gnarled faces have a dog-like panting smile to them. Hood points to the street wizards and the smiles turn to snarls as they go to attack them.
They swipe at the sword wielding wizard with their tentacles, but he twitches away from the hit and lets off two bolts of magic at them. Diddles x2 takes the hit like champs.
Another wizard barges past Steve to get into the apartment. The last wizard dashes in to try and reach Medusa. He fills his hand with energy and tries to palm off Lupo as he goes by, but she ducks out of the way.
Steve’s constellation changes from Leo to Taurus. His shape changes and he grows to the shape of a Minotaur.
Lupo goes to grab the wizard who tried to get past her (and rolls a 29 to hit). Where he palmed her off, she was able to snatch his wrist and pull him into a hold.
Medusa grabs a candle off of the coffee table and whispers an incantation to it. A small flame appears and swirls into a big fireball in her palm and throws it at the wizard Lupo is holding.
It hits the wizard and he lets out a scream and goes limp in Lupo’s arms, she lets him go.
Hood throws an Ebony Blast at the wizard pinned down by a couple o’ boys. He is thrown back against the wall and slumps down.
The boys turn to the last wizard and dive across the room to get to the last wizard.
The last wizard still has his sword and goes to slash at Steve again, but Steve swats the sword away.
Steve clenches both his fists and goes to slam them down on the wizard, but the wizard dodges back out of the way. The floor splinters under the force of the attack.
Lupo darts forward, slides through Steve’s legs and springs up into an uppercut. The last wizard is KO’d.
The boys get pets from Hood before they’re dispelled. Steve changes form to Aries, a normal sized person with ram horns.
Medusa explains that the wizards are thugs hired by a man who has been trying to employ her for the past few months.
She goes on to explain that one of the victims was the daughter of a very powerful wizard. He is not taking the death of his daughter well and is doing everything he can to try and bring her back, he's gone so far to even kidnap people who he thinks can help him.
Lupo cable ties the wizards' wrists after Steve sets their unconscious bodies on the couch. Hood takes a snap as a memento.
Medusa attempts to heal Steve, but isn't certain of his physiology, but she is able to restore his health thanks to magic (and a very high roll).
Steve and Lupo believe that the powerful wizard may know more about Dollface. They ask Medusa where they can find him.
Medusa warns them that he is a wanker, and his name is Epsilon the Veridian.
So, what's the best way to get an audience with Mr. Veridian?
The team agree to take Medusa to him, as they know now he wants her to help him.
They call Emmet to collect the street wizards from the curb and let him know Medusa is safe.
Emmet is distracted whilst on the call and asks the team to give him a moment, at the same time, Steve senses a surge of Dollface's power. Both reveal that there's been an attack. Lupo demands a location. It's Central Museum. Medusa goes to the station for her own safety.
The team race over to the museum!
Smoke is rising from the museum, it's one of the oldest buildings in the city. Police have already secured the area and part to allow the team get through as soon as they arrive. They rush up the stone steps to get inside.
Lupo activates her suit to go into Combat Mode, there is the sound of an electrical whirr but no visual changes to the suit and draws her escrima.
Hood summons Diddles Prime so she can be princess carried inside.
Steve shifts to Sagittarius form, becoming a starry centaur.
It's a 'team coming together' cinematic moment.
Inside, people look to have taken an Eldritch Blast and dropped. This isn't Dollface's MO, this looks more like a smash and grab.
Emmet over comms tells them that reports are coming in and Dollface is not how they remember her. She's looking for something and mowing down any who get in her way.
There are many arcane artefacts on display in an exhibition in the museum, the center point relic, is the Holy Grail.
Episode 3
The huge oak double doors of the museum are completely blasted open, runes and eldritch energy scatter across them.
Surrounding the main hall with a mezzanine floor, there is a trail of destruction. The large dinosaur skeleton that once stood in the hall has been scattered to pieces, the destruction leads up the stairs.
The team hear the sound of gunfire and 'magical pew pew', followed by outbursts of pain and silence.
There's a faint sound of strained creaking and the doorway leading through the exhibition. Artefacts have been swiped, leading into the main room of the exhibition hosting the Holy Grail.
The team lay eyes on a familiar body, but it's... Different. It's a dress maker's doll, but it's splintered and torn, held together by eldritch energies which are wildly surging and twisting from this mangled body. It's bigger, bulkier, more beastly than anything Dollface was.
Lupo takes photos from the cowl's feed to send back to Emmet.
The figure is clutching artefacts in its hands as it walks up the dais where the Grail is displayed on a glass plinth. The Grail itself is a beautifully simple wooden chalice. The figure is transfixed on it and doesn't notice the team as its back is facing them.
Steve summons a bow of void energy and takes aim, but doesn't shoot. He waits for Hood and Lupo's lead.
Hood calls out carefully, "Dollface...?"
The figure freezes, and their mannequin head spins 180 degrees to look at them. Hood squeaks as the figure's mouth contorts open and their jaw unhinges as they screech and unleash a beam of eldritch energy.
It hits the wall behind them, tearing a line along the wall to drop debris and glass on the team.
Hood summons the darkness to plunge the hall into the Shadow Realm.
Lupo's plan. Lupo, Steve and Diddles Prime will distract Dollface whilst Hood steals the Holy Grail so that she can't get it.
Fan out, with Lupo in the middle, Steve to the left, Diddles Prime to the right.
Lupo switches to night vision, to find that Dollface is blindingly bright. She switches to thermal, the heat signature from the eldritch energy is much better to look at.
Dollface leaps off of the dais and lands directly in front of Hood. She takes a huge gnarled fist and slams it down at her, Hood takes a bruise and is dazed. Diddles Prime drops her from his arms in surprise.
Steve shifts to Taurus form and charges at Dollface to get her away from Hood.
Hood commands Diddles Prime to throw her toward the Grail. He grabs her from the waist and like a football throw in, slings her toward the dais.
She sails through the air and somersaults into a finessed landing at the bottom of the dais.
Lupo strikes Dollface, an electrical surge sparks from the tips of the escrima, but as a construct doesn't take the electrical effect but does take the damage.
Dollface shrieks in pain and swipes out at her, but Lupo backflips out of the way. Dollface leaps up to and grabs into the stonework 10ft up in the air, she starts clambering toward one of the shattered windows.
"Don't let her get away!" Lupo yells.
Steve forgets for a moment that he can fly before pursuing. He tries to grab her, but the eldritch energies around her deflect him.
Hood launches an Ebony Blast at the glass case holding the Holy Grail, it shatters and an alarm starts sounding. The cup is brightly lit, even in the Shadow Realm, so Hood cannot teleport to get it. Hood commands Diddles Prime to attack Dollface.
Diddles Prime lumbers gracefully below Dollface and Steve. He throws his arm up and it stretches out into a swarm of shadow tentacles that lash at Dollface.
Lupo is aware that the alarm may alert Dollface back to her. She warns Hood that she's throwing a smoke bomb to give her more cover.
Dollface swats angrily at Steve, he takes a bruise and is dazed.
Steve swipes her back in retaliation. He misses.
Under the cover of the smoke bomb, Hood runs up to grab the Grail. She conceals the cup in a pocket within her cloak.
Diddles attempts to hit Dollface again but fails.
Lupo tells Hood to get back to Emmet and tells Steve to try and get Dollface into the middle of the room. She then switches out of Combat Mode to Utility Mode and use her new grappling hook to swing up to the chandelier.
Dollface's gaze snaps to Hood and leaps from the wall, batting Steve out of the way as she goes. Steve is unaffected by the hit. She lands in front of Hood.
Steve pursues and grabs Dollface with both hands and flies back, dragging her with him, to the middle of the room. He lets her go when he reaches the right spot and moves back. Steve is awarded a hero point!
Hood teleports with a pop outside of the museum. Hood is also awarded a hero point!
Lupo uses her grappling hook to swing off of the chandelier and fling a mini grenade toward the chain holding it up.
The mini grenade sails through the air and detonates. The cable frays and it looks like a single thread holds it together... It pings and the whole chandelier drops on Dollface.
Shards of metal and glass explode out from the chandelier followed by silence. Lupo swings down to the ground. Lupo also gets a hero point!
"Lights out...? Thanks for dropping in...? I'm sorry." Lupo's player has never been good at quippy one liners.
There's a pause as the dust settles, the metal frame of the chandelier shifts slightly and with a grunt of effort Dollface lifts the mangled frame of the chandelier and throws it at Lupo.
Lupo isn't able to dodge out of the way in time and takes a bruise and is dazed.
Episode 4
Still in combat from the last episode. Steve jumps up, raises his fists and slams them both down on Dollface. He opens the session with a crit!
Dollface finally goes limp.
The magical energy starts to subside, as it reduces down the splintered wood of the mannequin forms back into itself into a more recognisable form. She has no hair, but this isn't surprising. She lays limp on the floor.
Steve picks her up and carries her out over his shoulder.
The team leave the museum together, and people applaud when they see they've captured Dollface. The police move in to assist.
Hood goes to check on Dollface, and even though it's been a while since she last saw her and this mannequin has gone through the works, she doesn't think this is actually Dollface. Same colour, same style, same materials, same magic even, but this looks to be a male form. Hood relays this to the team.
Steve lays down the form on the steps, and in daylight, it seems this is absolutely the case. This isn't Dollface. Lupo takes some photos with her cowl for evidence.
The police transport the body back to the station, the team follow.
At the station, the team debriefs Emmet in a meeting room. Hood reveals she has the Holy Grail, Emmet isn't happy with her having it but Lupo insists it's safest with her.
Steve doesn't know what the Grail is, Hood just points at the cup. He receives no further information. He switches to Aries form.
The team theorise this new mannequin's source. All of the other mannequins from the Gingerbread House are in evidence lock ups. So where did this one come from? Emmet thinks that perhaps this mannequin was made at the same time Dollface was, and hadn't surfaced before until she started acting strange. Maybe they're working together?
Lupo doesn't want them to jump to any conclusions. She wants to get the mannequin on a slab and get Medusa to do an autopsy.
Hood also lets Emmet know about Epsilon the Veridian as their next lead. Emmet gives more information about his case, and that his daughter was named Charity.
Hood gives Emmet the Holy Grail.
In the morgue, the team take a moment to investigate the mannequin. Steve can see that there are faintly burnt in runes littered across the wood.
Medusa arrives and heals Lupo and Hood of their bruises, Steve declines. She asks how long the team have known Dollface, it's been approximately 4 months.
Medusa studies the body and starts to hover her hands over the body, as her hand traces over the runes they light and dim as she passes by. Over the head, the eyes light and then dim as she drops her hands, "There's a soul in here."
She thinks it might be human, but isn't certain. Lupo wonders if she can release the soul. Medusa is happy to try but needs some items, she makes a list.
Steve hears a commotion outside, raised voices out in the bull pen. Hood hears the conversation more clearly, officers telling people that they can't come in.
Steve switches to Gemini form and his double heads out to see what's going on. There are five street wizards demanding to get in.
Lupo instructs Medusa to stay and for Hood to protect her, Lupo goes out to see what's happening. Steve's original stays, his double remains out there. Hood summons a Couple of Boys for extra protection.
Outside, a police officer is firmly telling the street wizards that they cannot come in and they need to wait until someone is ready to see them.
Lupo steps up and backs up the officer, telling the wizards that the will do as the officer says and they will take a seat. The wizard defiantly asks why, and Lupo reminds him that this isn't his area of jurisdiction. The wizard slinks back and agrees, the wizards go to take a seat.
Lupo asks the police officer what they wanted, the wizards wanted to inspect the body.
Hood takes a look at the list to see what's on it. The items on the list are easily accessible from your high street arcanist, magic is as open as metahumans are now.
Hood relays the list to Lupo and takes a fresh list down, she goes to the wizards who have moved outside.
The wizards demand to see the body, Lupo says no, but she's willing to cut a deal. She tells them that she wants to arrange a meeting with their employer, they want to do an autopsy on the body, and that more wizards are likely going to be better than just one. As a show of trust, would they help with the body. They agree to help and will contact Epsilon.
Lupo gives them the list that Medusa needs, after all the wizards will know far better than she would what these items are. There's initial reluctance, but Lupo convinces them to go shopping for them.
A deal is struck, but then the wizards want to take the body, Lupo can't agree to that as it's police property now. They argue that it needs to be destroyed, but Lupo can't make that decision. They finally agree and go.
Down in the morgue, Hood asks Medusa about the Holy Grail.
"It's the flask that can give eternal life." Medusa explains.
"Yeeaaaah but what's it really for."
Medusa isn't sure, as no one has actually gotten it to work. There's potentially truth in the legend, but we aren't even sure if the cup Emmet now has even is the real Grail.
Lupo returns to the group to tell them she's struck a deal with them. Medusa is concerned as she's given them an inch and they'll take a mile, but Lupo reassures her that they can handle it if it comes to that.
Medusa doesn't trust them as they feel entitled to the body, Lupo agrees and assured her that they won't be taking the body, but they can look and investigate when they return with the items on the list.
They wait for the wizards to return. Evening draws in, and Emmet comes down to tell them he doesn't think the wizards are returning.
Lupo is happy to stay, Hood is going to take a nap and Steve doesn't need much sleep. Emmet is going to go and take a nap too, Medusa heads to bed, she doesn't need to stay up.
Steve switches to Aquarius, a crystalline form, to heal up and then switches back to Aries. He didn't like the sensation of Medusa's healing.
Lupo takes the opportunity to copy down some of the runes for her own reference. She takes off her cowl as well as she knows her identity is safe enough in here.
Steve positions himself directly above the door, back against the ceiling, feet on the wall above the doorframe. If anyone comes in he can get the literal drop on them.
He sleeps there.
Lupo is the only one left awake.
Some OC exposition. Magic is something that anyone can learn, but some have it in their blood, so those who are heroes are more likely to be innately talented.
Lupo hears a noise and calls out for Steve to wake up. She turns around to see Dollface, the real Dollface, standing in the doorway.
Episode 5
Dollface is surprised to see Lupo here. She tries to waffle as Dollface does, and Lupo is very clear that she has some explaining to do. Dollface attempts to leave, Lupo calls to Steve who swings from his space on the ceiling to try and stop her.
Dollface manages to break free of his grasp and hurriedly tries to walk away.
Lupo chases her down and grabs her by the arm and reaffirms that she isn't going anywhere until they get some answers.
Lupo convinces her to come back into the morgue and explain.
Dollface reveals that she wasn't an only child, her creator was Gretel Wintersmith. She was somewhat compelled by the idea of what may come of her after she moves on to the next world. She spent her entire life studying how to avoid the inevitable, but to no avail, until one day a selection of gentlemen approached her with an experimental form of magic.
Gretel was but a humble seamstress, weaving magic into charms and clothing. It wasn't until these men approached her that she finally had the chance. Her body would die, but her soul could be transported into another. If she made the perfect automaton, she would never have to worry about death again. The body she crafted is a marvel to behold... But the ritual did not quite go as planned.
Gretel was a good hearted woman, so much charity, love and good will, which is what Dollface embodies.
But her fear of death? Her ambition? Her spite, anger? Some are in her brother, some are in her sister.
Together, they are all remnants of Gretel.
In the past month, Dollface has been trying to protect herself and those she loves from the truth.
Dollface's brother was just full of fear and rage, it was no surprise what he became.
Lupo asks if she had anything to do with these deaths. Dollface admits only through inaction. Lupo believes her.
So what's next?
Dollface isn't sure, she wanted to see if she could stop him from waking up. If she can destroy the body, the soul could move on to the next world. But Lupo is concerned that whilst that's a good idea, the soul could just jump to the next best host... That being Dollface herself.
Lupo asks if her sister is involved, Dollface says yes - as she is all of Gretel's spite and ambition. She wants to survive.
But wasn't the autonomation supposed to be the ideal host?
The body was meant to play host to a complete soul. She is only a fragment ricocheting around a shell going mad, she needs to be completed. She needs the rest of her soul.
Dollface isn't sure where she is, but is certain that she will reveal herself.
Dollface has been trying to track down people who know about the rituals that Gretel underwent, but with little avail. However, those who she visited died several days after. Dollface is certain that her sister is hot on her trail, and could show up here.
Dollface has to keep hidden for now, so she is hidden away in a morgue rack.
Morning comes and the wizards return with the listed ingredients.
Medusa has not come back yet.
The wizards are keen to see the body, but Lupo insists that they wait for Medusa to arrive.
One of the wizards leaves to make a phone call, the others filter out with him.
Medusa arrives shortly after, and the arcane autopsy can begin. She passed the wizards along the way, who don't seem to be interested in helping now. Their loss.
With the ritual prepared, Steve switches to Gemini and sends his copy out to watch for the wizards.
The ritual begins and Medusa begins to magically deconstruct the runes, they glow brightly and then fizzles out, she does this all over the body. Medusa admits that this is incredibly advanced and complex magic, it was almost as if the soul was put in here as a prison or a vessel of some kind - but it wasn't clean, she isn't sure how to describe it. It's almost accidental.
Lupo reveals that this soul may only be a fragment of a larger soul, and after being questioned how she knows that, she admits they had a visitor last night and pulls Dollface out from her morgue rack. She quickly adds that Dollface is safe to be around, she's innocent.
Dollface relays the information she gave Lupo to the rest of the team.
Lupo asks Medusa if the name Gretel Wintersmith means anything to her. Yes! She was a famous arcanist in the city who died a year ago. Lupo says that she isn't so sure about that and gestures to Dollface and the body on the table.
Medusa, "Gretel what did you do?!"
Dollface, "Oh I'm not Gretel. I'm the honey and the marshmallows, if you want the meat you'll have to go someplace else."
Hood, "What the fuck analogy is that?"
Dollface, "I'm the dessert!"
Steve asks if Dollface knows anything about the magic that created them, but sadly that knowledge went to her sister.
Hood asks about the main bedroom from the Gingerbread House, who did that?
Dollface confirms that was Gretel conducting the ritual.
Dollface and her brother flailed around as they had no host after their sister claimed the automaton. They eventually found the mannequins that they now possess. However, their bodies are breaking down and this could risk their souls being lost. If their souls are lost, then their sister won't be able to claim the parts of her soul to make her whole.
Emmet has been standing in the doorway the whole time, he had been waiting for the right time to chime in.
Medusa decides that she is going to try and destroy the body. This means that without fear or anger, if the souls reunite they'd not have these feelings, which is good right?
Lupo quotes The Walking Dead season 3, "But fear is emotion's coffee, it keeps you on your toes!" But then is more serious, fear is often what can keep you alive.
They decide to see what happens if the soul is released. It could go to Dollface, it could dissipate, but just in case, they're going to grab a mannequin from lock up.
The ritual could be volatile, so Lupo and Emmet exit. Hood as a magic user herself remains, and Steve has his Gemini clone stay in there whilst his real self waits outside.
The Gemini clone and Hood clock that Medusa, as she is looking down over the body, that her eyes are different. They are blue, a slight shade of eldritch blue. Her eyes flair up and she lets out a scream, throws her hands forward toward the clone and Hood.
Both of them feel like their bodies are stopping them from moving, with all their might, they try to move but then as they look down they see their bodies turning to stone.
Episode 6
Medusa is turning Hood and the Gemini clone to stone!
The gang make jokes about getting stoned. Roll initiative!
Hood brings down the lights as she uses Shadow Realm and teleports out of the room to a storage cupboard.
Lupo tries to kick the door in, fails, activates combat mode in her suit.
Emmet also tries to kick the door in. Nope.
Astrologer shouts at Dollface to flee. The Gemini clone disappears as the Astrologer switches to Aries form. He tells the others to move as he preps to ram the door down.
Hood very slowly makes her way back to the group. She hasn't turned to stone exactly, but it's as though her muscles are fighting against her.
Lupo, in combat mode and therefore much higher strength, tries to kick the door down again. Still can't get through.
How tough is this goddamn door??
Medusa turns to Dollface, "Okay sister, let's bring you back to where you're supposed to be."
Dollface panics and tries to leave through the fire exit. Medusa reaches forward and energy pours from her hands to the brother's body on the table, and the mannequin swells with energy - splintering and deforming.
Emmet tries to kick the door again. He misses this time, and gives in to Astrologer as he steps out of the way.
Astrologer batters down the door. Finally.
He gets in between Medusa and Dollface and uses Extra Effort to use Battering Ram on Medusa again.
Medusa goes flying across the room and takes a bruise.
Astrologer becomes fatigued.
Hood is struggling against the stone effect, but manages to get to the door. It's time to unleash a Murder of Diddles.
Hood swirls her hands and 16 bats form from the darkness! Only, they aren't bats, they're cats. They're tiny Diddles'.
Dollface tries to circle around to the body on the table and eldritch energy fills in her hands as she prepares for an Eldritch Blast.
Lupo charges into the room, vault over the slab and does her signature, to quote, "Flippy thigh thing" to take down Medusa.
She successfully grapples her with her legs upon her shoulders. Thick thighs save lives.
Medusa tries to escape, she struggles, but Lupo's thighs are too mighty.
Lupo applies a chokehold and Medusa passes out. Lupo hops off as Medusa falls to the ground.
Emmet rushes in, seeing Dollface charging her attack and the body responding. He pulls his pistol and shoots her. He misses.
The power in Dollface's hands burns brightly as she raises her hands up, focused on her brother's body as it burns just as brightly.
Astrologer switches to Scorpio, humanoid with a large scorpion tail which shoots stings, and uses a Sting attack on Dollface, forgetting she is a construct and can't be poisoned. Having used another Extra Effort, he is now exhausted.
Thankfully the Sting is damaging, but Dollface shrugs it off.
Hood is now released from the stone effect now that Medusa has been taken out.
She rushes in the room and asks Dollface what she's doing.
"We need to destroy this body! We need to let the soul pass!" Dollface replies.
Hood is satisfied with that and suggests we listen to her.
Emmet has his gun trained up, and is worried it's not a good idea.
Hood makes that awkward noise of 'eeeehhhhhhh' for the rest of her turn.
Dollface looks to everyone, "I've got to do this!" She drops the Eldritch Blast, now huge, onto the body. A bright shining light fills the room.
Everyone tries to dodge. Astrologer and Hood manage to turn away in time, Lupo isn't quick enough and is dazzled.
The energies fly around the room chaotically, the room upheaved and the tempest of magic builds as Dollface screams. The energy envelops her.
Lupo restrains Medusa whilst Hood and Astrologer handle the Dollface situation.
Hood hears footsteps from behind her, she turns to see the street wizards. One tries to grab her but she shirks away.
Emmet opens fire on the street wizards, but he can't hit for shit.
Astrologer is going to try and freak them out.
He walks up to the street wizards, floats up into the air and turns into Capricorn form.
From a six foot something void man, down into a two foot tall half goat, half fish in their eyeline. They are staring into the void of a sea goat.
Astrologer crits his intimidation.
Dollface is still screaming.
The street wizards are in a full panic over the fish goat.
Hood screams at them to run, "IT'S A BOMB, A MAGICAL BOMB, GET OUT! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!"
The goat mreeehs as Hood gestures manically for the exit.
There are about eight wizards, and all of them are freaking the fuck out.
The energy suddenly stops, suspended in the air for a moment before all of it surges into Dollface. Her body contorts and stretches as her body struggles to contain all of this magic. Everything stops, there's a beat of silence, and then it explodes.
Episode 7
The blast hits everyone.
Astrologer is bruised, but Lupo and Hood are okay.
The street wizards are ripped away from the blast and only three remain.
They look up to see that the fire exit is blown open and an energy trail of smoky magical energy trails outside.
Hood, "I told you so!"
Lupo grabs Medusa's unconscious body and brings her out to the wizards. She throws her at their feet, "You can have her, but we're coming with you."
The wizards spark weapons into their hands, "Why would we want her?"
Lupo declares that Medusa caused this, the killings, the explosion, and that half of her soul is spilling out into the streets.
The wizards accept, take Medusa and tell Lupo to keep up.
Lupo tosses a stimpack to Astrologer to heal up his wounds.
Lupo jumps on her motorcycle and Hood hops in the sidecar. As Capricorn, Astrologer sits on the back of the bike, he is still exhausted.
Emmet is riding with the wizards in their minivan.
They are taken the outskirts of the city, down a winding road past huge ornate gates hiding even grander mansions.
They pull up to a gate with a finely wrought epsilon symbol upon it. They head up the driveway that wind up to a manor house.
More wizards are patrolling in pairs around the premises. Emmet and the wizards leave the van and regroup with the team.
"Would a Red Bull cure exhaustion?"
"...No."
They approach the manor, where a bald gentleman with a long goatee and moustache with a green cloak strolls out of the front door.
Lupo dumps Medusa in front of him, and then has to pick it back up again when he reveals he is not Epsilon but will take them to him.
He takes them through the foyer into an entertaining room. It's a big room where the walls are lined with large bookcases filled with old tomes with a large round table in the middle of the room which hosts a fantastical 5D magical form of chess.
Lupo sets Medusa down on a couch. Enough time has past that any bruises are healed, and Medusa has woken up.
Hood snoops around the room, it seems to be specifically designed to show status. There is an awards cabinet, combined with the game, books and fancy chess set, they're exuding importance. Hood is not impressed.
Astrologer goes to Medusa, he asks if she's okay. She is, so he asks if she can heal him. She can, but her hands are bound behind her back.
Astrologer sits down, dejected.
The doors swing open.
"Okay, picture like... A fantasy wizard. But instead of an old wizard, it's a fuck boy."
The man looks to be about 24-25, which implies his child Charity was merely a small'n, the team feel some empathy for a moment, until he swans in, arrogant as fuck, and demands to know what they want.
Lupo starts to explain the situation from the morgue to him, but then Hood cuts across to imply that the wizards spoiled the autopsy.
Epsilon stares at her, and says that he doesn't like when people lie to him.
Thankfully, Astrologer changing forms from Capricorn to Libra distracts him from her.
They introduce him, and things start to spiral before they even begin. Lupo wonders if alcohol might be on the agenda, Epsilon says that they do not drink as it slows them down.
Hood taunts him, saying that he's slowing them down, but Epsilon does not rise to it.
Lupo's having a 'what is happening' moment.
Epsilon tries to sarcastically joke that he didn't realise it wasn't bring your daughter to work day.
Lupo, "She's not my daughter... Shall we speak in private?"
Epsilon disagrees and just asks her to carry on. Lupo explains the morgue situation again.
Epsilon tries to smarm about and say that the wizards knew what was going on, and that they tried to say something.
Hood and Lupo in unison, "No they didn't!"
Lupo tries to explain how the wizards showed up late to the agreed appointment. Sadly it doesn't work, his ego is too big.
A frustrating conversation is had where they try to set the story straight. It turns out that the wizards left as they sensed the magical energy of the killer, who was outside and controlling Medusa.
Lupo expresses her frustrations that none of this was communicated, and that she had been trying to set up a 'trust circle' between the team and the wizards so they could move forward in this together.
Exasperated by the arrogance of Epsilon and the wizards, Lupo stops playing nice and lets the frustration get to her.
Whilst she does this, Astrologer changes to Pisces and becomes a mimic of Lupo and her mannerisms as she goes off.
"Listen here pal..."
He snaps to, Lupo and Astrologer's team intimidate check was very high!
She reiterates that she's put a lot of effort into making this work, she knows that he knows who she is, what she's done and what she's capable of. She knows that he knows that she holds the city's best interest at heart.
"...So how about you stop fucking around and help me."
Epsilon tries to smarm again about how that's all he's been trying to do, Lupo isn't having it.
She tells him to stop going in circles and to stop hiding in his stupid house whilst he sends out his lackies to do his dirty work, this is his daughter and he should be the one out there fighting for her not standing here in his trophy room. He should be out there with us.
Epsilon declares that he's done, and he leaves. Lupo lets him go.
Lupo picks up Medusa and goes to leave.
As they leave, a number of wizards are gathered at the door, pulled in by the sound of Lupo's shouting. A few of them give Lupo a nod of respect.
The group go to leave, but as they do the wizards seem to have been alerted to something. As one passes, they tell the team that it's their 'Robot Friend'. The team quickly go to follow.
They go outside and around to the back of the manor to the expansive grounds.
The truck pulls around and opens up, they've captured Dollface. She's bound with energy to prevent her from moving.
The wizards with Dollface bring her out into the open and throw her down. Epsilon appears and approaches. Evening draws in.
Hood teleports to Epsilon's shadow to get a better view, hiding in plain sight.
It looks like he has a wand in his hand.
Astrologer heads over. Epsilon addresses the crowd, "Ladies and gentlemen, be on your guard - for the bait is set!"
Episode 8
Hood is still in Epsilon's shadow and the Astrologer is closer to the action. Lupo is hanging at the back with Medusa.
Lupo asks Medusa what the hell happened. Medusa is sure it was mind control of some kind, and the effect she isn't sure because she can't remember. However, she's been mind controlled before and she's aware of the sensation when you 'go under'. Lupo determines that she's telling the truth and release her binds. Medusa stays with her, thanks her and apologises. Lupo tells her what they learned in the previous episode.
Medusa is concerned that they've never even seen Dollface's sister, nor do they truly understand what she's capable of. Lupo agrees, this isn't the best plan, but it's what they have to work with. They're ready for if things go south, which they anticipate it will.
Enough time as past so that Astrologer has recovered from fatigue. A bad joke is made about Twilight and he gets another hero point.
Night is ushered in. Hood and Lupo can use night vision and Astrologer uses infravision to see what's going on, he floats up into the air to get an aerial view and blends into the night sky. He is in Virgo form, there's no physical difference to this form, only the constellation change.
Everyone prepares for an ambush when the call comes in that she's on her way. Everyone hides, Lupo activates combat mode and Hood summons a Couple o' Boys.
It's honing in on midnight when the team finally start to see arcs of blue energy in the sky.
Astrologer flies over to take a look, he sees a figure inside of a whirlwind of blue light flying towards the building. Astrologer flies back to find Lupo to notify her that they're approaching fast.
Lupo draws Skoll and Hati and lays in wait.
Dollface has been rigged up so that she is pinned out King Kong style.
The figure lands before her, the energy crackles and dissipates as she steps forward, seemingly having a dialogue with Dollface but the team can't hear what.
Lupo stealth closer to listen in, Astrologer floats slowly to blend into the sky to do the same.
From where Hood is, she can't hear but she can see. The figure is an automaton of a steampunk style design, sleek and chrome with a cavity in the chest harnessing pure blue energy that feeds through fibreglass cabling flowing through the body. It's beautifully put together.
Dollface appears to have woken some, despite still being restricted in her bindings.
Hood also moves forward stealthily, the team naturally form a pincer manoeuvre.
They can finally hear what's being said, and they're talking about family - although the sister is the only one really doing the talking.
She's fully berating Dollface, calling her an imbecile for being captured. The team get the gist of the conversation, the sister's been looking for her for some time and has finally found her, and she isn't impressed with what she's found.
The sister grabs her by the throat and they slowly rise up into the air. Blue magical energy starts to swirl around them, it looks similar to how the brother's body started to look when it started to break apart.
Astrologer flies up to them both and informs the sister that this isn't a good idea, as it's a trap, he's not part of the trap. But this is a trap.
The party is PERPLEXED.
The sister screams and spins, trying to bat him away with the body of Dollface.
Astrologer dodges the hit and attempts to mind control the sister. He does not succeed.
Eldritch energy starts pouring from her face as she screams at Astrologer, "You do not control me!"
Floodlights suddenly illuminate the sky and wizards pile out of their hiding spaces and start to throwing magic at the sister.
Astrologer tries to dodge out of the way, but fails as he takes a hit. He is bruised and is staggered.
Astrologer switches to Aquarius and everyone rolls initiative.
Hood tries to the sister with a Shadowy Bind. They fly through the air and wrap around her body, she starts to drop out of the sky and Dollface's body begins to fall as well.
Astrologer flies down and uses Extra Effort to try and grab her, she slips through his fingers and continues falling.
The wizards are still firing, and Astrologer is hit again but he toughs it out.
Lupo connects Skoll and Hati together to create Fenrir, and then leaps forward to try and swat the sister out of the sky.
Ed rolls a 1 for the sister's toughness. Lupo's Fenrir is damage 10!
Fenrir connects with the sister's head, sparks fly up as she slams into the ground creating a dust cloud.
A bolt of lightning strikes Lupo in the back, she takes a bruise and turns around to see Epsilon approaching, "She's mine!"
Lupo steps back, she lets him at her.
Hood commands the boys to catch Dollface and turns to Epsilon to ask what's going on.
He responds, "All you people do is get in the way of my plans!"
Hood, "What is your plan?"
Epsilon, "To kill the thing that killed my daughter."
Everyone lets him through. All the team want is Dollface back.
A metallic fist bursts out of the Shadow Binds as the sister, Gretel, stands up. Electricity sparks through her body, in her eyes and in her hands as she screams and blasts the closest person to her, Hood.
Electricity arcs through the air and slams into her chest, but Hood is able to deflect it.
Astrologer is able to snatch Dollface out of the air using another Extra Effort. He is now exhausted.
He lands, sinks to his knees and lays Dollface down.
The wizards circle around Gretel and the others. Epsilon demands for the wizards to bring Dollface.
He shoots an arc of red lightning at Gretel, she is hit and screams, staggering on the spot before composing again.
Hood, "Why do you want Dollface?"
Epsilon, "Because I want to kill the thing that killed my daughter."
Hood, "But Dollface didn't kill her!"
Epsilon, "She's part of the soul that did!"
Hood, "No, they're separated."
Epsilon, "They all need to be destroyed together."
Hood, "No! She's our friend! You can have Gretel."
Dollface is drifting in and out of consciousness.
Epsilon, "I want them both."
Hood stands defiant, "No."
She throws an Ebony Blast at Gretel, but she misses.
Gretel flies forward, grabbing Dollface by the throat before flying up in the air, "You know, I first thought I needed every part of my soul in order to remain alive, but that's not true, I just need enough to be stable. Which means there are parts I can live without, such as weakness... Remorse... Charity."
Her grip tightens around Dollface's neck as the wood splinters, the light in Dollface's eyes flicker, "But there are parts I would like to have, such as her rage... Her power."
The energy from Dollface's face breaks free as energy from Dollface's and Gretel's eyes and mouth link together in a transfer of high pitched, screeching energy.
Hood and Lupo are dazed, Astrologer is also stunned by the sound. Epsilon falls to a knee and covers his ears.
With one last Extra Effort, Astrologer switches to Aquarius form, lands and hunkers down into a crystalline form.
The wizards are clutching their ears, disabled by the sound.
Lupo throws a mini-grenade at Gretel, apologising to Dollface as it impacts. The explosion hits, but doesn't break the chain.
Splintered wood fly off of Dollface and metal shards fall from Gretel, they start to spiral, but are still linked.
Epsilon shakes off the noise and energy starts to spark in his hands as he readies his attack.
Hood throws another Ebony Blast at Gretel. The screeching stops, and the link is broken. The sparks draw back in to the both of them, Dollface is lucid and is suddenly aware of what's going on.
Gretel, still holding Dollface by the throat, is also lucid again, "You are a vessel of all the parts that I don't want, so thank you, because, I don't need to worry about you any more." With a twist of her wrist, she snaps Dollface's neck and her energy spills out and snuffs out like a candle. Her body completely splinters and falls to the ground.
Sparks dance between Gretel's hands.
Epsilon screams and unleashes his attack on Gretel, it hits her and she's pushed back, but she comes forward again, energy still forming in her hands.
Astrologer heals his bruise and recovers from staggered in his crystal form. He transforms into Cancer form, is humanoid form with crab claws.
The wizards start shooting again at Gretel. None of them hit.
Lupo throws another mini-grenade, it connects and the blast takes her out. The energy peters out of her, and the automaton body drops like a stone, no energy left within her.
She craters into the ground and Epsilon screams, "No! She was mine!"
Lupo uses Extra Effort to backhand Epsilon, "Grow up you overgrown man child!"
Epsilon turns to Lupo, "Do you know how many years I've been alive? And how many of those years I have not had a family, and finally the one time I can have something I truly love and this creature takes it away from me. And now I have another reason to live, to destroy that thing and now you've taken that from me." His hands crackle with energy as he targets Lupo.
Hood taunts and asks Diddles to play them a sad song for Epsilon.
"And now you're my quarry." Epsilon charges his attack, and Lupo throws Fenrir to the ground.
She opens her arms to him, tired and broken, she's lost another friend tonight, "Have at me."
He throws his hands forward, electricity blasting from his hands and hits her in the stomach... Lupo is fine.
She looks him dead in the eye, almost disappointed, her momentary thoughts of ending it seem to have gone.
Hood checks on Gretel and sees that there is a flicker of light in her cables, "Hey, hey Epsilon look she's not dead!" She slams her with an Ebony Blast, glass shatters and Gretel is definitely dead, "Aw nah nevermind." The boys cackle like hyenas.
Astrologer uses a hero point to shake off the exhaustion and changes to Virgo.
Epsilon is raging. Lupo punches him in the face, he tanks it, only just.
He retaliates by coating his fist in a dull green glow and makes a swing, but Lupo easily parries.
"I'm gonna kill you and then I'm gonna kill your daughter."
Hood starts laughing hysterically, "She ain't my mother! I don't even have a mum!" Looking around at the other wizards, "What is wrong with this guy?"
Hood changes a Couple o' Boys into a Murder of Diddles and orders them to go and shit on Epsilon. She's literally cooking up a shit storm.
Lupo socks him again, Epsilon steps back and spits blood before stepping forward again.
He tries to hit back, but Lupo easily deflects again.
The murder of Diddles swarm over Epsilon and the 'floodgates' open upon him.
Astrologer is able to compel Epsilon with mind control, he makes him lick his lips and say, "Hey guys this is some good shit." No one else realises that Astrologer has done this and Epsilon genuinely looks like he's lost his mind. Epsilon is able to shake the mind control.
Lupo is baffled, but it doesn't stop her, she sweeps his leg and Epsilon goes down. She stands over him and tells him to stay down.
"I... I'm... Fine," Epsilon relents, "This is not the last that you have seen of me."
He rolls over and as his cloak flips, he disappears.
Lupo and Hood go to the remains of Dollface. Her head is moderately intact, but her body is completely splintered.
Lupo kneels and turns the wooden shards in her hands, Hood tries not to cry. There's no energy left, she's gone.
A hand appears on both their shoulders, it's Emmet, he's looking at the remains and shaking his head.
"How many people do you think she actually ended up saving?" He asks as it starts to rain.
Neither answer.
The city is illuminated in the background, shining into a dark night sky.
We cut to Lazy Susan's Diner. Everyone's in the booth with milkshakes.
Emmet fiddles with a pen without looking up, "So, uh, that's two we've lost," He turns to Hood, "Look, I knew this wasn't going to be a safe business for you to be in, but I don't know if after 50% of our team no longer being with us if I can in my best mind send a child out into the fray anymore."
Hood shrugs, "Hey, you say that, but I'm still here." She pats him on the back.
Lupo, out of suit, is not really engaging with any of them. Emmet thanks her, but she doesn't respond. She's broken.
Emmet stands up and raises his milkshake, "Dollface wasn't with us for very long, and she was herself for only a few months - a year at most. But, I think that the impact she made on all of us is worth a lifetime. I'd like to hope that by the time I... Y'know, that I'd impacted half as many lives as she has. It's a shame that it was ultimately her undoing, but I guess that's how things go. At least she's finally at peace, all of her is."
Hood, ever the one to read the room asks, "Emmet, whatever happened to my fancy milkshake cup?"
Hood asks Astrologer whether he'd like to become an Urban Legend. Astrologer would like that.
Lupo slips out, Emmet follows and calls after her. She ignores until he asks where she's going, she just wants to be alone.
Emmet respects that, but he reminds her that they need her - this city needs her. Lupo isn't sure she can do this anymore.
Emmet, "What's coming? You're potentially the only one who can help us with this."
Lupo, "What's that supposed to mean?"
"There's a new team in town, heroes. I don't know if you've seen or heard them, they've been making waves... And I have a reason to believe that they are..." He trails off and hands her a card with a symbol that she hasn't seen for a long time. A symbol that fills her with dread.
End of Season 5.
TL;DR
After Lupo leaves Captain and her adventures on the high seas behind to return to New Haven, Emmet reveals that Dollface has gone on a killing spree.
Lupo, Hood and Emmet work out that the victims are people from the magical community who can restore health and prolong life. They identify their old friend and colleague, Medusa, as a potential victim.
Whilst investigating the burnt out remains of The Gingerbread House, a haberdashery owned by Dollface that doubled as the team's old base, an alien in the shape of a humanoid void of stars and the night sky appears having been drawn in by the residual magical energies of Dollface's attacks. He has no name, so Hood dubs him Space Man Steve.
The team track down Medusa to ensure her safety, and shortly after arriving at her home they are accosted by Street Wizards who want to take Medusa to their employer: Epsilon the Veridian, who has a reputation as being an extremely powerful wizard, and a bit of a wanker.
After dealing with the Street Wizards, the gang are called to an attack at the museum. There they face off against a monstrous eldritch form of Dollface that is trying to steal the Holy Grail. Hood extracts the Grail to safety, whilst Lupo and Steve handle Dollface.
Once defeated, they realise upon closer inspection that this mannequin is not Dollface at all. It's a male figure, extremely similar to Dollface, but they are not the same person.
They take the body back to the morgue where Medusa starts to prepare an arcane autopsy, on an initial investigation she realises that there is a soul trapped inside the body. In the mean time, more Street Wizards arrive demanding to see the body. Lupo strikes up a deal with them, the wizards can assist with the autopsy and conduct their own investigation, but in return she wants an audience with Epsilon. The wizards agree.
As night draws in and the wizards have yet to return, the team set up shifts for the night to watch over the body to make sure there aren't any shenanigans. After Hood and Steve go to sleep, the real Dollface appears to Lupo.
Dollface reveals that there are three mannequins. Herself, her 'brother' on the slab, and her 'sister' who is in possession of a stunning autonomation of a body. The lady who used to live in the Gingerbread House, Gretel Wintersmith, was a witch who wished to transcend beyond her mortal form and live on in the body of the autonomation that she created. However, the ritual went awry and her personality split between the three mannequin siblings. Dollface and her brother had to find hosts, as her sister claimed the automaton, which is why they are host to dressmaker's mannequins. Dollface admits that these hosts are less than ideal, as their bodies are breaking down under the magical strain of their souls.
Dollface is Gretel's kindness and compassion, her brother is Gretel's fear and anger and finally, her sister is Gretel's ambition and tenacity. Dollface is sure that her sister wants to reunite her personalities into one, but her ambition is setting her on a dark path without Dollface's sweet nature to temper it.
The team decide to destroy the brother's body in the hope that his portion of the soul will either dissipate, or potentially be absorbed into Dollface. Medusa begins the ritual, however, the gang notices that her eyes have turned a mysterious powder blue... She turns on the team and tries to paralyse them, but thankfully she is quickly subdued. Dollface in the mean time takes over to destroy the body herself.
The wizards from before finally arrive, just in time to witness Dollface's ritual explode in the room and blind everyone. When they come around, she and the body are gone, having left through the fire exit.
Lupo strikes another deal with the wizards, handing over Medusa on the condition they come too. They finally get to meet Epsilon the Veridian who is indeed, a wanker, he is a young and extremely arrogant man who lives in a grand manor outside of the city. The team try to forge an alliance between them and the wizards, but it appears that Epsilon's ego is just too much.
After a thorough dressing down by the team, they go to leave, only to see that the wizards have captured Dollface and plan to use her as bait to get the final sister who has been orchestrating the murders. The wizards set up an ambush.
The sister, Gretel, takes the bait and comes to collect Dollface before trying to fly off. The wizards rush out to attack and the team join in. Hood is able to bind Gretel in shadow and Lupo slams her to the ground. The Astrologer catches Dollface from the fall.
Up close, Gretel is a sleek steampunk automaton with brushed chrome casing and fibreglass cabling running through her limbs. The blue eldritch energy makes the cabling glow brightly and in her chest is a glass cavity with swirling magical energy inside.
Epsilon declares that Gretel is his to kill and the team allow it. However, his arrogance clouds the need for haste and he commands for the wizards to bring Dollface. He wants to kill them both as they are part of the same soul and just as responsible for his daughter's death. The team protest, but it's all the time Gretel needs to get up and grab Dollface to fly off again.
Gretel only wants one thing from Dollface, the parts of her soul worth having - the rage and power she absorbed from their brother. The rest? Dollface's kindness and compassion, is a waste to her. Gretel takes what she wants, and then breaks Dollface's neck, the energy in Dollface's body withers and goes out and destroys the mannequin with it.
The team bring Gretel down again, and Lupo gets the final blow. Epsilon rages that she took away his one reason for living, to get revenge on his family, Lupo is now his quarry. Lupo takes him down, with some assistance from the team. Epsilon declares this won't be the last they see of him and vanishes.
The team comes together to mourn Dollface, Emmet comforts Lupo and Hood.
We cut away to the diner, where the team have debriefed and are relaxing. Emmet expresses concern for Hood's safety as a child, but she assures him that she isn't going anywhere. He then stands and gives a eulogy for Dollface, and ever being one to read the room asks what happened to her fantasy milkshake cup. Awkward chuckles aside, Lupo leaves the diner and Emmet hastily follows.
She admits to Emmet that she's not sure if she can do this anymore, but Emmet asks her to stay as she may be the only one who can help them with something to come. He tells her of a new team making waves in the town, and shows her a card with a symbol that she hasn't seen in a long time, one that fills her with dread.
End of Season 5.
